Pic-001 This golden Bauhinia statue marks the handing back of Hong Kong in 1997. Behind is an example of the decorations on many of the skyscrapers on Hong Kong Island.

Pic-003 Not exactly traditional dress...
Pic-004 The top of the Peak tram, used for the 7 minute trip to the top of Victoria Peak. The gradient is 27 degrees at its steepest.
Pic-005 The view over the Central district from the Peak.
Pic-005a The Star ferry is an institution, taking thousands of commuters and tourists between Hong Kong Island and the mainland each day.
Pic-005b Wong Tai Sin Temple, Kowloon. This is the Main Altar, home of the god Wang Tai Sin and the interior is covered with paintings devoted to Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
Pic-005c Many local people come to worship at the Altar, holding aloft bunches of incense.
Pic-006 This is the River Avon in Christchurch, New Zealand - a city with a very English feel.
Pic-007 Now running only a short tourist loop, tram routes once covered most of the city.
Pic-008 Another unusual form of transport, this is a Haagland antarctic explorer. Christchurch is host to the American and Italian Antarctic programmes as well as the NZ one, and has a very good museum/experience centre.

Pic-011 The FIrst Church of Dunedin, established by the Scottish Prebytarians who founded the city. The hill on which it stands was lowered by 12 metres by prisoners of war from the Maori (Land) Wars.

Pic-013 The interior of the station.
Pic-014 A Northern Royal albatross, from the world's only mainland albatross colony at Taiaroa Head, Otago Peninsula. We took a boat tour (on the Monarch) to get a good look at the colony.
Pic-015 View over the reserve run by Elm Wildlife Tours - home to sea lions, seals and yellow-eyed penguins. A lot of the grass in this area was imported from Wales, as the sheep introduced by early settlers couldn't survive on the native grasses.
Pic-016 A yellow-eyed pengiun, one of the world's rarest. The two brown shapes at the rear of the nest are young penguins, not yet fledged.

Pic-018 A New Zealand fur seal. Although nearly hunted to extinction by early (mainly British) settlers, a network of reserves means numbers are now rising.

Pic-020 Skipping forward a couple of days, Mirror Lakes is an early stop on the 120km road from Te Anau to Milford Sound. In the right conditions, this sheltered lake gives perfect reflections of the mountains.
Pic-021 The Eastern end of the Homer Tunnel, marking the high point of the road to Milford. The Tunnel is 0.75 miles long, running downhill ata gradient of 1:10.
Pic-022 Part of The Cascades, as the Cleddau River tumbles down towards Milford Sound.
